The 2008 and 2012 draw the most complaints. NHTSA owners of the 2008 describe fuel that spills out when refueling, a defective Sky Slider roof and wipers that fail, while 2012 owners most often mention air bag concerns. CarComplaints lists a faulty TIPM, gas overflowing at the pump and the Sky Slider for 2008, TIPM failures with no start for 2010 and air bag lights and stalling for 2012. Unlike modern Jeep unibody crossovers, the Liberty used body-on-frame construction through its entire production run (2002-2012). Door jamb sticker and B-pillar label are also present. The VIN sits on the dashboard plate, and the frame rail near the front crossmember carries a stamped VIN. The KK generation starts with the 2008 model year; the VIN’s 10th character (8 for 2008) shows which side of that line a car falls on.
