Chevrolet Silverado VIN Number Location

Where to find the VIN on a Silverado

Silverado's primary VIN plate is at the base of the driver's side windshield. Because Silverado ranks among the most-stolen full-size trucks in the country, also check the frame rail stamp near the front axle, on theft recoveries, this stamp is harder to alter than the dashboard plate. The door jamb sticker and cab corner behind the driver's door provide two more cross-reference points.

The VIN also appears on the vehicle registration, insurance documents, and title. All locations should match. A mismatch between VIN plates is a potential indicator of a rebuilt or salvage vehicle.

What to Check on a Used Chevrolet Silverado

Silverado trucks from the 2014-2018 model years had documented issues with transmission shudder in 8-speed automatic models. Rust and corrosion claims are common on trucks registered in salt-belt states. A free VIN decode shows factory specs, assembly plant and engine, plus any open NHTSA recalls.

What Silverado owners report across recent generations

2019–present (4th generation)

Engine and powertrain complaints lead NHTSA reports for the 2019. Owners describe lifter failures, low oil pressure warnings and, in some cases, a seized engine, and CarComplaints ranks slamming into gear first for 2019, ahead of lifter trouble and shudder when accelerating. On 2021–2024 trucks with the 6.2-liter V8, a 2025 recall targets connecting rod and crankshaft defects that can cause engine failure, with dealers inspecting the engine, repairing or replacing it as needed and switching to a thicker oil. Early 2019 trucks also had recalls for brake control software and battery cable rings. [1] [2] [3]

2014–2018 (3rd generation)

Powertrain and brake complaints top the NHTSA list for the 2017. Trucks with the 8-speed automatic draw reports of shudder, harsh jerks between first and second, gear hunting and sometimes transmission replacement. CarComplaints flags surging, jerking and hard shifts as early 2017 problems, and a 2016 owner on Reddit describes hard shifts and asks about a fluid flush. A recall for 2014–2018 Silverados reprogrammed the brake control module because vacuum pump output could drop over time and reduce brake assist, with symptoms such as pedal vibration or a Service Brake Assist message. [4] [5] [6] [7]

2007–2013 (2nd generation)

Owner trouble on this generation looks lighter in NHTSA data, which for the 2011 is dominated by air bags. A recall for 2007–2011 trucks sold or ever registered in certain states and territories replaces a front passenger air bag inflator that could explode, and some complaints describe waiting for parts. Owners of trucks with the 5.3-liter V8 and Active Fuel Management discuss oil burning and lifter wear on Reddit, and CarComplaints lists peeling paint, transmission clunks and oil consumption as the top 2012 problems. NHTSA complaints also mention rust. [8] [9] [10]

What to check before buying

Run the VIN through the NHTSA recall lookup to confirm the passenger air bag inflator on 2007–2011 trucks, the brake assist recall on 2014–2018 trucks and the 6.2-liter engine recall on 2021–2024 trucks. Ask for records of lifter, camshaft or engine work, oil changes and transmission fluid service. On the drive, listen for ticking at idle, feel for harsh engagement or shudder, and press the brake several times to confirm the pedal feels normal.
