Audi has sold the A6 in the US since the 1995 model year, and there have been six generations. The C4 came first (1995–1997); C5 (1998–2004), C6 (2005–2011), C7 (2012–2018), C8 (2019–2025) followed, and the C9 took over for 2026. 2019–2025 (5th generation, C8)

Complaint counts are modest for the A6, so the data is thin. The 2019 draws the most NHTSA complaints, and most owners describe electrical faults, from door locks that fail to a full electrical shutdown, while others report steering, transmission and battery problems. CarComplaints lists a failed water pump, thermostat and vacuum lines and an alternator failure for 2019. Recalls cover moisture that may short the starter-generator, liquid getting into the gateway module and a faulty fuel level sender. [1] [2]

2012–2018 (4th generation, C7)

Complaint counts are low for this generation, so the data is thin. The 2012 draws the most NHTSA complaints, and the most common one is coolant leaks. CarComplaints lists an overfueling injector, oil consumption and an exploding sunroof for 2013, a coolant leak and water pump replacement for 2015, and turbo failure and failed front engine mounts for 2016. Audi placed the A6's VIN on the dashboard plate, the door jamb sticker, the engine bay near the strut tower, and inside the trunk lid. Some configurations also carry a spare tire well label. The C9 generation starts with the 2026 model year; the VIN’s 10th character (T for 2026) shows which side of that line a car falls on.
