2016–2022 (2nd generation, F48)

The 2016 and 2017 draw almost all of the complaints. Many NHTSA owners of the 2017 describe a transmission warning telling them to secure the car against rolling when they shift into park, which they blame on a faulty shifter, and owners of the 2016 most often report sunroof shades that come off their tracks. CarComplaints lists a cracked engine mount, coolant leaks and a sunroof shade problem for 2016, and broken coil springs and a shifter fault that sets off a warning for 2017. 2013–2015 (1st generation, E84)

The 2014 draws the most complaints. NHTSA owners of the 2013 and 2014 most often mention air bag warnings and recalls, and electrical faults that make the dashboard flicker or shut the car off. CarComplaints lists a foggy film on the windshield and doors that will not latch for 2013, a car that shifts into park on its own and rattles for 2014, and engine hydrolock, a leaking plastic radiator and an exploding sunroof for 2015. This generation was sold in the US for 2013–2015 only. Recalls cover driver air bag inflators on 2013–2015 models, coolant pumps on 2013–2015 models and brake vacuum pumps on 2013–2014 models. What to check before buying

Run the VIN through the NHTSA recall lookup, including the air bag inflator and coolant pump recalls on 2013 to 2015 models.
Ask whether the gear shifter has been replaced.
On the drive, shift into park several times and watch for transmission warnings, check that the sunroof shade stays on its tracks, and watch for coolant or electrical warnings.
